Every December, we post our annual 'Startups to Watch,' a collection of early-stage Boston companies that we predict and anticipate big things out of in the coming twelve months and beyond. The list will be live on Tuesday, December 11. Throughout the year we will host founders, VCs, executives, professors, thought-leaders and more, and give them the stage to share their expertise, successes, analysis and commentary with the local innovation community. These events will be around trending and hot topics in the ecosystem, as well as around emerging industries and categories. We invite you to come out, meet other professionals in the innovation economy and learn from leaders in the community. Panel will be announced soon! Please join us for a charity spin class at the Handle Bar in Harvard Square to help us raise funds for ALS research! All of the funds raised will go directly to the Angel Fund, a non-profit charity that donates 100% of funds raised to support the work of Dr. Robert Brown and his team atthe Day Laboratory at UMass Medical School seeking the cause and cure of familial ALS. Help us launch this year’s theme HOW DOES CAMBRIDGE ENGAGE? "The Ground We Walk: Unearthing the Stories That Must Be Told" What does this story of everyday people in Cambridge and Boston, who took collective action to stop top-down highway projects, and envision a different future for themselves have to teach us today? What collective memory of this time lives on, and where does it live? Speaker - Dr. Karilyn Crockett, MIT Lecturer, Public Policy & Urban Planning Dr. Karilyn Crockett’s research focuses on large-scale land use changes in twentieth century American cities and examines the social and geographic implications of structural poverty. Karilyn’s new book "People before Highways: Boston Activists, Urban Planners, and a New Movement for City Making" (UMASS Press 2018) investigates a 1960s era grassroots movement to halt urban extension of the U.S. interstate highway system and the geographic and political changes in Boston that resulted. Karilyn was the co-founder of Multicultural Youth Tour of What's Now (MYTOWN), an award winning, Boston-based, educational non-profit organization. MYTOWN hired public high school students to research their local and family histories to produce youth-led walking tours for sale to public audiences. During its nearly 15 years of operation, MYTOWN created jobs for more than 300 low and moderate-income teenagers, who in turn led public walking tours for more than 14,000 visitors and residents. In a White House ceremony, the ...

Hallelujah The Hills have been releasing critically acclaimed albums and touring the U.S. since 2007. Described by Spin as “criminally underappreciated” and lauded by Pitchfork for their “fist pumping anthems,” they’ve been declared “Boston legends” in their hometown and as having a “cult following and pockets of hardcore fans scattered throughout the country” by Stereogum. The band released their first two albums on Misra Records, assisted Titus Andronicus in making their breakout album The Monitor, and are one of the only bands to have ever toured with The Silver Jews. The Hills have also worked with Jealous Butcher Records, Re-Vinyl Records, and are the recipients of two Boston Music Awards. Their sound was creatively explained as “the kind of punk rock you’d expect on stage at the roadhouse from ‘Twin Peaks’” in the Boston Herald. Argo Arkestra will play music from the 1970's anime cartoon Star Blazers (Space Battleship Yamato in Japan), accompanied by live video manipulation of the scenes from the cartoon. Argo Arkestra is Adam Brilla, Chris Braiotta, Bear Brown, Tyler Derryberry, Ernie Kim (members of Broken River Prophet, Planet of Adventure, Gun Mother, Jernie/Dark Crystals/Slight Foxing/The Beagles)

Now with the development of artificial intelligence, we are faced with new possibilities. How can we use AI to make things better for people? Join us for a conversation about “augmented intelligence.” IDEO believes that data science and machine learning can help us design intelligent products, services, and systems that improve people’s everyday lives. MIT and Harvard rolling out the red carpet for the Saudi Crown Prince in March 2018 was no fluke: it is symptomatic of the lack of democracy on campuses across the United States. Increasingly, university administrators act in our name, but without our involvement. We believe a meaningful outcome from the controversy around Saudi partnerships would be an alternative, community-based process for how universities should conduct themselves, consisting of three parts: reckoning with harms, disclosing terms of partnerships, and repairing what is broken through a collective, community-based partnership. As such, we are hosting this free, public event, with participants from Harvard, MIT, Boston University, Boston College, Northeastern, Suffolk, UMass, Tufts, Brandeis, Cambridge City Counsel, and Massachusetts Peace Action.
